Starting in June 2024, USO Fort Shafter launched a new program for children called “Keiki Craft.” This exciting event was designed to provide children with a creative outlet while giving parents a chance to relax, enjoy refreshments, and connect with other parents. Held twice a month, initially every other Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Keiki Craft became a highlight of summer break, offering kids a fun and engaging activity to look forward to.

As summer came to an end, the program evolved to better accommodate school-age children. Beginning in September, the second session of each month was moved to 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., allowing older kids to participate after school. The flexibility of the new schedule ensured that children of all ages could continue to enjoy the creativity and fun that Keiki Craft provided.

Kristine Schou, a staff member at USO Fort Shafter, expressed her love for organizing the children’s event. “I love organizing events for children, such as Keiki Crafts, as these events are fun for kids of all ages. It provides them a creative outlet, allowing them the opportunity to make new friends at the USO,” she shared. Her enthusiasm was evident as she watched the children’s faces light up with pride over their colorful creations.

In each session, children will enjoy activities such as making slime, decorating wooden trucks and vanities, and personalizing flowerpots. With all art and craft supplies provided by the USO, parents can sit back and relax while their children express their creativity. To add even more excitement, there will be bubbles and refreshments.
