Honoring a Lifetime of Service: A WWII Veteran Visits the USO

Our Honolulu Airport Center recently had the privilege of welcoming Command Sergeant Major Delmar Beard, a Navy and Army veteran whose service spans three major conflicts. CSM Beard first served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, where he was a gunner aboard a Landing Ship, Tank during the Battle of Iwo Jima—one of the fiercest and most pivotal battles of the Pacific. He then continued his commitment to country with 22 years in the U.S. Army, serving in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

CSM Beard’s visit to the USO marked the beginning of his historic visit to O’ahu, as he prepared to join fellow World War II veterans in commemorating the 80th anniversary of the war’s end in the Pacific.

During his time in our Center, CSM Beard enjoyed a beverage and shared captivating stories with our staff, volunteers, and patrons. His humor and wisdom filled the room. For everyone present, it was a rare and meaningful opportunity to learn directly from a living piece of history.

Our Center provided CSM Beard a welcoming place to rest, refresh, and connect—a continuation of the same mission that began more than 80 years ago, when the USO first supported service members during World War II.

Though his stop at the USO only lasted a few hours, it will carry on in the hearts and minds of our volunteers, patrons, and staff as a truly humbling and inspiring moment. His lifetime of service across three wars embodies sacrifice, resilience, and dedication. To be able to serve him—even in a small way during this historic milestone—was a true honor.

Moments like this are why the USO exists. From World War II to today, our mission has remained constant: to strengthen the well-being of the people serving in America’s military and their families. Supporting CSM Beard during his journey is a testament to the enduring impact of the USO across generations of military service.
